When God Decorates a Heart

Write about a moment that looked ordinary but was actually sacred. That was one of the prompts given to me on a quiet Thursday night. I stared at the words, letting them sink in, turning them over and over in my mind, searching for where to begin. As I sat there in the stillness, a gentle nudge stirred in my heart.

Open your Bible app.

I reached for my phone, almost absentmindedly, but the moment I tapped it open and the verse of the day appeared on the screen, something shifted. From that verse, the story began to pour out of me — not forced or strained, but flowing, as if each sentence had been waiting patiently for that exact moment to be written.

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

I used to think my bedroom was just a room. Four walls, old furniture, colors I’d chosen years ago and never really questioned. But over time, I began to feel a quiet pull in me — a sense that this space no longer fit who I was or who I was becoming. It felt like I had outgrown it.

The more I paid attention, the more I realized my room wasn’t just outdated; it was a reflection of deeper things. The clutter, the colors, the way everything stayed “stuck” in the past — it all seemed to spill over into my personal, spiritual, and even professional life. You’ve probably heard the saying that when your home is chaotic or doesn’t feel like a safe haven, the rest of your life starts to mirror that. That was exactly what I was experiencing.

In the middle of this, I sensed God inviting me to change it — not just to rearrange furniture or buy new decor, but to completely surrender the process to Him. This time, I didn’t want to make it “my” project. I wanted it to be our project. So I came to Him honestly and said,

“Lord, I don’t even know where to begin. I’m overwhelmed just trying to pick wall colors. Why does this feel so heavy? What are You trying to show me? Is this a season of teaching? What are You doing in this?”

I had so many questions, but I chose to trust Him. I handed Him the entire process — my confusion, my indecision, my desire for change. I laid it all at His feet.

The very next day, He began to answer in the most unexpected way. It was as if He opened a floodgate of visions. I started seeing every detail of the room in my mind: the exact colors on the walls, the placement of the furniture, the style of the decor, even the smallest accents. Nothing was random. Every single detail carried a meaning from Him.

As He walked me through the design, I realized He was doing far more than renovating a bedroom. He was telling a story — my story, and who I’ve become because of Him.

  • Some elements reflected my childhood; the innocence, the early dreams, the parts of me I thought were long forgotten.
  • Other details spoke of my young adult years; the struggles, the growth, the searching.
  • Still others represented who I am now, having stepped into adulthood with Him; healed, seen, and deeply loved.

Each piece, each color, each choice became a symbol. Together, they formed a prophetic picture of my journey with God — a visual testimony of how He had been there through every season, even the ones I didn’t recognize Him in at the time.

Through this process, I discovered even more of His heart. I saw how deeply He cares about the things we care about, even something as “small” as the way a room looks. He doesn’t just want the big, parts of our lives. He wants all of it — the day-to-day decisions, the tiny preferences, the quiet desires we barely say out loud.

And yet, He never forces Himself in. He is a gentle Father — kind, patient, and respectful of our free will. He waits to be invited. He created us to walk with Him, to talk with Him, to include Him in everything: big and small, sacred and ordinary. He longs for a relationship where we trust Him enough to be obedient, even in the little things that don’t seem sacred at first glance.

What started as a simple bedroom makeover became a sacred season of one-on-one time with Him. In that intimate process, He began to heal parts of my heart I didn’t even realize were broken. He brought memories to the surface, not to hurt me, but to heal me. He revealed more of who He is — steady, present, attentive, endlessly loving.

By the time the room was finished, it was no longer just a nicely decorated space. It had become a prophetic room — a living, breathing story wrapped in colors, textures, and symbols. Every corner held meaning. Every detail testified to a divine conversation between a Father and His child.

This wasn’t just a moment; it was a collection of sacred moments. A sacred dance between a loving Father and His daughter, expressed in paint, fabric, light, and stillness. My bedroom became what He always intended it to be: a sanctuary, a reflection of His love, and a place where His presence meets my everyday life.
